Migrating from an on-premises Microsoft Exchange Server to Office 365 (also known as Microsoft 365 or Exchange Online) can be done manually using the following general steps:

Prepare your environment: Ensure that your on-premises Exchange Server is up to date and meets the requirements for migration to Office 365. This may include installing the necessary updates and patches, verifying system requirements, and setting up the necessary connectivity, such as DNS records and certificates.

Create Office 365 tenant: If you don't already have an Office 365 tenant, create one by signing up for a subscription and setting up your domain within Office 365. This involves creating user accounts, setting up email domains, and configuring other settings in the Office 365 admin portal.

Configure Office 365 for migration: In the Office 365 admin portal, configure settings for migration, such as setting up the migration endpoint and creating migration batches. This allows Office 365 to communicate with your on-premises Exchange Server and start the migration process.

Export mailbox data: Export mailbox data from your on-premises Exchange Server using methods such as PowerShell cmdlets or third-party tools. This typically involves exporting mailbox data to PST files, which can then be imported into Office 365.

Import mailbox data to Office 365: Import the mailbox data from the exported PST files into the corresponding Office 365 mailboxes using methods such as PowerShell cmdlets or the Office 365 admin portal. This transfers the mailbox data from your on-premises Exchange Server to Office 365.

Verify and complete migration: Once the mailbox data has been imported to Office 365, verify that all data has been transferred correctly, including email messages, contacts, calendars, and other mailbox items. Perform necessary post-migration tasks, such as updating DNS records, configuring email routing, and testing mailbox functionality in Office 365.

Decommission on-premises Exchange Server: After confirming a successful migration to Office 365, you can decommission your on-premises Exchange Server, if desired, by following proper procedures for decommissioning Exchange servers.

Greetings,
Peter
